SPOTLIGHT PROFILE
SCOTT SUMPTION | PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER
MIND OVER MADNESS

Tell us about your company's origins?

I founded Mind Over Madness in 2014 with the intention of providing clients with flawless event execution. Our name really is our mission statement in that we put a great deal of thought and expertise into every production we undertake so that our client's experience is one of seamless execution, rather than the mad chaos often associated with events.

How has the events industry evolved since you began?

The speed at which events are coming together is truly remarkable when you think about it. Lead times for certain projects in the late 90’s and early 00’s that would have taken months are now coming together in a matter of weeks. Yes, agencies have become more aggressive, but technology plays a huge role as well. The fact that I can reference a location on Google Earth and have an understanding whether or not it’s suitable for our needs in a matter of minutes is amazing! That and smartphones, which have allowed us to stay connected the world over.

How is your company differentiated from others?

We’re small, nimble and we deliver creative that is amongst some of the best out there. We are free of office politics and we strike vendor alliances that are in the best interest of our clients, versus the other way around. We make sure pricing is fair; clients pay for what they need; and our delivery is flawless.

What is the most exciting thing about today's experiential landscape?

The fact that it’s ever changing. I’m continually inspired by the new technology we’re seeing in productions and experiential executions. You now see folks from the tech space embracing what event producers do, and they’re constantly pushing the envelope to deliver innovative solutions to the challenges we face. Looking at LED screens and lighting, 4k filming and projection, wireless technologies, data management and virtual reality, it’s a really exciting time to be in the industry - not that it was ever dull!

What are the three most important things every event must have?

Only three? Ok, you need to over-communicate schedules, roles and responsibilities for one. We have a proprietary workbook that includes the aforementioned plus site survey questionnaires, event deliverables, graphics/printing guidelines and more so that we have a single digital resource with information for our team on each project. Two, we create a contingency plan and adopt Murphy’s Law. And, lastly, you need to create an environment that questions and challenges conventional norms so that guests and consumers are excited and stimulated by their experience - no matter how big or small.

What motivates your work life daily?

The people whom I’m fortunate to work with and the challenges that each project presents. I love the ability to create something out of nothing and work with the best designers, fabricators, technicians and tradespeople in the business - turning imagination into reality.

What is your passion outside of the office?

Skiing when I can. It’s the only sport that allows me to clear my mind. I just focus on the next turn and nothing else...
