EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH
WHITNEY FIERCE

As usual, you've been killing it on the music scene lately. Your new mix is super fun with so many different elements — love the combo of Beatles, Michael Jackson and EDM. What was your inspo?

I love that music is an escape, and in today’s world, I feel like we all really need one. I honestly started playing this set just to lift my spirits, and all of a sudden there was a party going on! These are all songs that take me to different points in my life and I love traveling through memories. I hope these songs make other people smile as much as they make me.

As with everything else, it's important to keep things spicy by literally mixing it up. How is this new mix different than your other mixes?

I generally theme mixes — could be based on an idea, a genre, a decade, even a feeling, but this one is a feeling that I wanted to achieve. I wanted to dance and smile and be silly, I wanted to go up, down, and upside down. Maybe this is a self portrait.

What would you say your music style is lately? How does this reflect in the places your playing?

My style always changes with venue. If I’m playing a festival, it’s going to be different than a brand party, but I always like to inject something fun. Even if I’m playing an all house set to thousands of people, I’ll throw in a recognizable sample or remix. I think music is about making people feel good and reading a room, and making it better than it was before. (Spoiler alert: at home I rarely listen to mixes, I’m most often listening to classical, jazz, or world music)

You used to solely live on the West Coast, but recently you've become a New York girl! Are you living bi-coastly now?

I am! It’s the best as I’ve split my adult years between LA and NYC, and now I get to basically be two places at once (they said it couldn’t be done)

How has officially moving to NYC changed your lifestyle in relation to DJ’ing?

New York is an amazing place to DJ, there’s an incredible range of places and parties to play. Of course I love the extended drinking hours because I can play a six hour set and really take people on a journey. I also think New Yorkers have different taste than Angelenos, and it’s fun to play new and varied songs. I also love that I can walk to one of my monthly residencies at Public Hotel. Now that’s something that doesn’t happen in LA!

PERFECT PLAYLIST
DJ ALEX MERRELL | ANGRY ORCHARD
“Music finds a way of bringing people together and the same goes for cider. I’ve always had a love for finding and sharing great music with friends and family. When I put a playlist together, I’m looking for a blend of what everyone loves and a bit of the unexpected to keep people intrigued. Angry Orchard’s Rosé Cider is refreshing, energized and definitely something unexpected that everyone will enjoy.” -Alex Merrell
Alex Merrell spun at the launch party of Angry Orchard's Rosé Cider in NYC at the end of February. The new cider, made from rare French apples, has people obsessing over its instagrammable rosy color. According to the press release, "The hard cider style has a floral aroma, provides an apple forward taste, and is complimented by refreshingly light tannins, similar to a semi-dry wine. The bright, rosy color compliments the juicy, yet dry finish of this medium body cider.” When putting together her playlist for this event, Alex kept the product and consumer in mind to make the event fun and bubbly. See below for her top tips when creating the perfect playlist.
Tips for Curating the Ideal Playlist:
  • It’s not a gathering without music. Whatever you’re hosting – a dinner party, a backyard barbecue, or brunch with friends, music makes the occasion memorable and sets the tone for your party.
  • Music is very similar to food and drink. I choose every song in a specific order that reflects and evolves with the evening, just as you would build and pair a menu. After all, good food, good drinks and good music can be transcendent.
    • Angry Orchard’s Rosé Cider is the ideal beverage to amplify your evening from start to finish. Many people associate Rosé with the summer months, but I love to drink it year-round and the new Rosé Cider is a great go-to, one that is easily drinkable and can hold its own at the table.
  • Crafting a playlist from scratch, you have control over the vibe, tempo, theme and more. You need to think of the group you’re playing for, the time of day, the volume and even the intended outcome.
  • One of the first questions to ask yourself is - what’s the goal of your playlist? Are you trying to create a chill, relaxing atmosphere where your guests can enjoy the music, but also have great conversations? Are you starting the evening with some background music and building to a full-on dance party?
  • The goal is to always play music that everyone will enjoy. Your playlist should have a bit of spice, but also a variety of slow songs, faster songs, classics, pop hits and other musical styles to keep people interested. The best way to do this:
    • Tip #1: Work your tracks up to top hits. Starting with songs that are more chill and building to songs that crank up the sound and enthusiasm for your gathering are sure energy boosters.
    • Tip #2: Don’t forget the crowd-pleasers – you know, the songs that people may laugh at, but really, they secretly love them. Yes, the Madonna and Michael Jackson tracks of the world.
    • Tip #3: Timing is everything. You want to make sure your playlist has enough songs to last the occasion without repeating. Creating a playlist with at least 3 hours of music is a safe bet to ensure you have a steady set list for your gathering.
  • Angry Orchard’s Rosé Cider fits perfectly into any occasion and any playlist. It’s crisp and refreshing, sure to enhance the vibes of your guests’ experience. It’s also great to look at with its rosy hue and its drinkability allows for it to be enjoyed all night long.
