DJ NICOLAS MATAR

If it takes fifteen years to make an overnight hit, then Nicolas Matar has truly come of age. The story of house music has run from the New York underground via Ibiza to London and back around again many times over the past fifteen years – and as the chapters have unfolded, our man has been there to turn the page.

Nicolas has been DJing since the tender age of 15. He got an early head-start from his father, an original member of Studio 54 and a denizen of the 70′s New York club scene. “Dad was a hobbyist DJ had an incredible collection of Disco, Funk and Soul records,” says Nicolas. “I grew up with a mini club in my basement. My parents used it to entertain their friends with my Dad behind the decks.

Nicolas musical style is very diverse, encompassing everything from Deep House, Soulful House, Nu-Jazz, Techno, to Disco Classics. Like most globetrotting DJs, Nicolas spins regularly in the US, UK, Spain, Brazil, France, Mexico, Peru, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia, Greece, Finland, Canada, Singapore, Belgium, Korea, Hong Kong, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia and Switzerland. It is perhaps his greatest accolade that from 1993-2001, Nicolas was the resident DJ of the world-renowned Pacha in Ibiza. Nicolas credits those years during the golden era of House Music at Pacha as the inspiration for his eventual return to New York to build Cielo in Manhattan followed by Output in Brooklyn.

MARI MALEK

Since she fled South Sudan as a refugee 18 years ago, Mari Malek, aka DJ Stiletto, has become a successful model and DJ in New York City. She is also the founder of Stand For Education, Inc., a non- profit organization dedicated to providing access to education for underprivileged children and empowering girls. As a result of the intensifying civil war in South Sudan, Malek escaped with her mother and two younger sisters. They spent four years in Egypt where they applied for asylum and were granted refugee status. Mari and her family were sponsored to New Work, New Jersey before they found their relatives and relocated to Sand Diego, California. One day on a walk to school, Malek was approached by a modeling scout. In 2006 Malek moved to New York to pursue modeling which led her to be the first South Sudanese internationally known DJ. She now uses her status as a platform to bring light to an often ignored plight. Mari feels fortunate to have learn from her experience what it means to be an empowered individual, and to use such inspiration to create similar opportunities for South Sudanese women and children whose lives have been torn apart by the violence and inhumanity of war.

LOUIE VEGA

A godfather of global dance music, Louie Vega has painted an award-winning career from a palette mixed with everything from salsa and afro-beat, to jazz, hip-hop and soul. What distinguishes the Grammy winner and 4-time nominee as one of the best living house music deejays is his ability to evolve alongside the times, distill the current musical landscape through his unique taste and put his own timeless spin on it. “Little” Louie Vega, as he is sometimes affectionately known, was born in the Bronx into a musically gifted family (his father, a jazz saxophonist, and his uncle, Salsa King Héctor Lavoe). The “Little” moniker is ironic, given the fact that by the 80s he was deejaying at clubs he wasn’t even old enough to attend, holding residencies at Studio 54, Devil’s Nest, Hearthrob, Roseland, and the Palladium. Soon Vega was producing his own remixes, which included Information Society’s “Running”, Noel’s “Silent Morning” and Debbie Gibson’s “Only in my Dreams”. Then in 1991 he joined Atlantic Records—and hit the mainstream. Teaming with an-up-and-coming Marc Anthony, he helped to produce “Ride on the Rhythm”. An immediate hit, the single put Vega and Anthony on the map. The duo would rock the club circuit, with their success culminating when they opened for Tito Puente at his 100 Album concert at Madison Square Garden.

One of the keys to Vega’s success is his knack for refusing to being boxed into any one category, not only reflected in the various music styles his songs play with, but by his fruitful collaborations with other artists. And so more success came in 1991 from the production team he created with Brooklyn-based deejay Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez. Masters at Work, as they were called, were responsible for the critically acclaimed albums “Nuyorican Soul” and “Masters At Work – Our Time is Coming”. Not to mention the duo found the time to remix and or produce for Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Madonna, Jamiroquai, Tito Puente, India, Janet Jackson, Tania Maria, George Benson, Black Eyed Peas, Jocelyn Brown, Los Amigos Invisibles, Bebe Winans, and Earth Wind & Fire. 

Vega has always been hungry for a challenge, and the aughts saw him move into new roles that expanded on his artistry; first up, that of record label owner. Featuring a roster that included Anané Vega, Luisito Quintero, Elements Of Life (his live band), Mr. V, Boddhi Satva, Hugh Masekela, Roberto Roena, Lisa Fischer, and Cindy Mizelle, Vega Records has released over 130 singles and 9 Full Length CD / Albums.  In addition, Louie Vega has released over 25 compilations (with over 2 million cds sold) on the industry’s most revered imprints, including Ministry of Sound Recordings, Defected Records, Kingstreet, Azuli, Division (Italy), Concept,  & Strictly Rhythm records. 

In his other venture he joined with world-renowned NYC-based jewelry designer Kenny Hwang to create a signature line of hats, jewelry, t-shirts, and additional memorabilia. As these businesses flourished, so did Vega’s music, and in 2006 he received a Grammy Award for his remix of Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” on Rhino Records.  Then, not more than a year later, Cirque Du Soleil approached him and the house-music group Blaze to compose and produce a song for a once in a lifetime event.  And so Anané Vega and Elements Of life performed the song “One Dream” to the acrobatics of Cirque Du Soleil during the 2007 Super Bowl Pre-Game Show to over 70,000 people at Dolphin Stadium in Florida and were seen by 145 million television viewers.

…Yet as we move through the twenty-tens, Louie shows no signs of slowing down…

The past four years since April 2010 have brought forth yet another outlet for Vega. Hosted by Vega and Kevin Hedge, the Roots NYC LIVE Radio Show airs on WBLS 107.5 (New York’s longest running R&B and soul radio station). Rated the #3 radio show in New York on Friday night, they air every Friday from 10PM – Midnight (stream live www.wbls.com). To keep the music flowing on all the continents, Vega can also be heard every Saturday from 5pm – 6pm over IBIZA SONICA on the Sunset Ritual Radio show with Anane Vega in Spain (www.ibizasonica.com), and every Saturday at 10pm via KAYA FM’s Dance Ritual with Louie Vega (www.kayafm.co.za) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ever the music innovator, in 2013 Vega released Elements of Life – Eclipse on the legendary Fania records.  The record, 4 ½ years in the making, keeps the style of Vega’s earlier albums (African, Jazz, Latin, World), but injects it with Soul, R&B, Gospel and Blues. Featured artists on the album include Anané Vega, Lisa Fischer, Cindy Mizelle, Ursula Rucker, Josh Milan, Luisito Quintero, Oveus Maximus and an all-star cast of musicians.  The occasion was momentous not only because it was the first new artist album Fania had released in years. In Vega’s words, “…[It] really comes full circle now, being able to be on the label my uncle Héctor Lavoe was on and the Fania All Stars who are all great inspirations for me. Fania Records is to Latin music what Motown is to R&B and Soul, so to even be a small page in this encyclopedia of music is a dream come true for me.”

With all the good fortune he’s received, Vega finds it crucial to give back. During most of his free time he donates Vega Memorabilia to auctions, deejays at fundraisers and serves as a good will ambassador for the Christian Rivera Foundation. Currently, Vega and Anané are headlining their Sunset Ritual brand, an outdoor party held at prestigious beach clubs around the world and drenched in the sounds of House, Global Disco, Afro tech and Old School. Sunset Ritual has toured the Mediterranean every summer since 2010, including a two-year residency at the Blue Marlin beach club in Ibiza. Just this past year, from the 21st of June until the 20th of September 2013, the Sunset Ritual’s good vibes were back in Ibiza, this time at the famed Ushuaïa Hotel. This May 2014, Anané and Louie will release the first Sunset Ritual cd/dvd. Then in the summer Sunset Ritual will resume across beaches of Ibiza, Formentera, Italy, and Greece. In 2014, Masters At Work will reunite with a full blown project and Anthology on the House Masters Defected Release #21. Louie Vega & Kenny Dope will once again come together to create music and do what they do best, produce and make you dance!Breaking down musical barriers and bringing people together through a love of music has always been Vega’s aim; after more than 20 years in the game his contributions continue to positively influence the global house and world music.

Glen Matlock

Glen Matlock needs little introduction. As well as penning arguably the most famous punk song ever, Pretty Vacant, Glen wrote the music to the Sex Pistols classics, including Anarchy In The UK and God Save The Queen, creating the benchmarks for any aspiring rock band.

However, the Sex Pistols represent only a fraction of what Glen has achieved. His next band, the Rich Kids, put out one of the most influential albums of the late 70s, Ghosts Of Princes In Towers, packed full of rock ‘n’ pop gems. Working with Iggy Pop, (who recorded Glen’s song Ambition), during the 80s, kept him in the limelight and at the top of his game. Throughout his endeavours, Glen has performed with a Who’s Who of Rock ‘n’ Roll Cool: Bobby Gillespie, Clem Burke, Slim Jim Phantom, Zak Starkey, Chris Spedding, Robert Gordon, to name check just a few from the last couple of years alone.

In the 1990s, Glen began his re-emergence as a force to be reckoned with. His solo album Who’s he Think he is When he’s at Home? recorded for Creation Records, was a full-on guitar album, blistering in its intensity, taking everyone by surprise. Glen, recording and performing as The Philistines, continued his reinvention in 2000 with the acclaimed Open Mind album. The set showed a man having regained the high ground; Rattle Your Cage, Idiot, Sad Meal For One, and the title track were up there with his best. On Something arrived in the middle of the decade, an album which saw the full spectrum of Glen’s prowess dovetail into one of the best rock releases of the period. Highlights included the fiery Piece Of The Action, the Glam Rock feel of Playboy Blues, and the Faces influenced OK Kiddo. White Knuckle Ride was a pile driver which got young pretenders sitting up and taking notice. The Philistines line-up has evolved over the years, with the different players all bringing their own unique style to the table. Drummer Chris Musto, guitarists James Stevenson, Ray McVeigh, Koozie Johns, Mick Jones, Tony Barber, and Steve New, have all added to the rock ‘n’ roll mix in the studio or live on stage. Hesta Prynn 

Combining a distinctive street style with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, former Northern State MC Hesta Prynn takes full responsibility for bringing the party.  It makes sense with a pedigree this undeniable. This is the girl who Questlove lauded to the New York Times when they toured together, who has recorded with the likes of Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys and DJ’ed a party for Lena Dunham entirely on vinyl.

When not writing her Paper Magazine column, ghostwriting hit songs or scoring Super Bowl commercials, Hesta Prynn is performing internationally alongside artists including Jay-Z, Vampire Weekend and DJ SBTRKT. DJ Mad Marj 

Marjorie is an avid music lover with a background as a radio disc jockey.
 
As far back as her boarding school days, she was mixing dance tapes that her friends couldn’t wait to get their hands on. When Marjorie was a student at New England College, she got her broadcasting license and worked as a DJ on the local radio station under the name “Mad Marj.” Since turning pro again three years ago, she has been spinning at the hottest parties around the world. Roger Taylor

While on break Duran Duran in the early 90’s, Roger Taylor and a friend teamed up to produce music and DJ together. They released a string of underground dance records, culminating with “Love Is Like Oxygen,” which was a Top 10 hit on the U.K. dance charts.

For the past few years, Taylor has had a residency at London’s celebrity hot spot The Met Bar, performing for the likes of Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gray, Marilyn Manson, and Joaquin Phoenix, just to name a few.

Taylor sights influences stemming from long nights in New York’s infamous 80’s dance clubs, such as Danceteria, The Limelight, and Area – aswell as the now legendary Rum Runner Club, where Taylor formed Duran Duran with John Taylor and Nick Rhodes. 
Frequent trips to club mecca Ibiza over the years have also cemented Taylor’s love for dance music. Hearing DJ superstars such as Frankie Knuckles, Carl Cox, and Danny Tenaglia, left resounding effects on the music that shapes his sets today. 
Having been with Duran Duran since the beginning, Taylor is an integral part of the 70 million records sold, 18 American hit singles & 30 UK Top 30 Tunes. His passion for electronica played a key part on their new album, Red Carpet Massacre, while in the studio with Timbaland, Nate ‘Danja’ Hills and Justin Timberlake. 
If Taylor’s success as a drummer with Duran Duran is any indication of what is in store for us when he hits the decks, revelers on dance floors all over the world are in for a real treat.

Thomas Dolby 

Thomas Dolby has crafted a career that blends music and technology. His early hit songs, “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive!,” and his keyboard and production work in the studio garnered him numer- ous awards, five Grammy nominations and live performances with the likes of David Bowie and Stevie Wonder. Recognizing the opportunities for digital distribution of music, Dolby started Beatnik Inc. licensed technology to Nokia to co-develop the first embedded software synthesis “polyphonic” ringtone engine for mass-market devices. Whitney Fierce 

Whitney Fierce has a pretty impressive resume, as a DJ and guest/touring vocalist for Hercules and Love Affair & New Order. She has performed at some of the world's most massive festivals, venues and events, thanks to the clout of her name, a little clever scheming and free-spirited swagger. 
A California-native raised between Detroit and Los Angeles, Fierce was led to dance music after falling in with the DFA Records crew. With them, she moved from L.A. to New York, and started throwing her own wildly successful parties across the city. Spinning records was a new trick but she dove in with a fearless punk attitude, and was quickly recruited by Nylon Magazine, TopShop, AllSaints and others as the hot new DJ in town. Building on a solid foundation of house and disco, Fierce began blending her background of classical musicianship with a powerful flair for the eccentric, producing her own tracks with an acute obsession over the minute details.
