We sat down with the fiery red-head and DJ extraordinaire, Hesta Prynn, who shared her inspirations, passions and most unique performance.
What is your background and what inspired you to become a DJ?
I started out in an all-girl hip-hop group called Northern State. We toured with The Roots for two years. Questlove taught me how to DJ on vinyl and the rest is history.
If you could play for anyone, anywhere who and where would it be?
I have been lucky enough to play for designers I love, like Oscar de la Renta and Erin Fetherston, as well as personalities like Jimmy Fallon and Amy Schumer. I have also opened for Kendrick Lamar and Solange.
What's your go-to song guaranteed to get a crowd on the dance floor?
I've been called an "encyclopedic" DJ because I play the hits in all genres. I like to mix the hits with throwbacks. I'm the person who will play Dua Lipa into Tears for Fears into Justin Bieber into Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson works across the board, as does Whitney Houston. If it feels good, I'll do it and the crowd always responds.
Where is the most unusual place you've performed?
In June I performed on a yacht in Cannes during a crazy windstorm. My vinyl literally flew into the sea!
Aside from creating music, what are your other passions?
I volunteer in a women's mental health clinic and I am about to publish a children's book about female political leaders from across the world. I also co-produce the New York City Drone Film Festival and the upcoming Los Angeles Drone Film Festival which were both started by my husband. I know a lot about drones!
